Major Rug-Producing Regions of the World

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ORIENTAL CARPETS come from traditional rug-weaving areas of the world: Turkey, the Caucasus, Iran, Central Asia, western China, and India. In the 15th and 16th centuries, they were also produced in Spain and Egypt.

When you think of an Oriental rug you probably are thinking some really tight design made by some dude in Afganistan or one of those stans, but in actuality the really guy making it most probably is Turkish. Turkey is the leading manufacturer of Oriental Area Rugs in the world. HArd to believe right? Well it is true. The best part is that we can get it from the Turks pretty darn cheap, so we can even call them Discount Oriental Rugs.

Over the centuries, rug-producing regions developed distinctive styles based upon local traditions of manufacture, availability of materials and dyestuffs, and preferences for particular patterns, designs, and colors.

Rugs from different areas share technical and stylistic features that enable us to identify major regional groupings as shown.
