Flokati rugs

Flokati rugs are eloquent.  Flokati rugs are the new style of area rug.  Flokati rugs have been a Greek tradition for centuries. The 5th century Vlachs who lived in Samarina, the highest village on the Pindos Mountains, were the inventors of flokati rugs.  As shepherds, they raised sheep and goats, producing dairy products sold during the winter in the plains of Trikala, Thessaly, Macedonia and as far away as Odessa. They used these rugs primarily as clothing and bedding for their tents, keeping them warm during the long winter months. The women of the village, having access to the wool, would weave Flokati rugs to be sold at bazaars during the winter. This tradition continued for centuries and didn’t cease until the early 1960’s.  The Mazarakis family has continued the tradition of producing fine  Flokati rugs and other hand-woven rugs.

During the past fifteen years, there has been a tremendous demand for higher quality Flokati rugs. Customers and retailers alike have realized that a definite niche exists for quality products in the American home.

Shag and contemporaries are the hip new rage in area rugs. An addition to the trendy soho rugs they add a twist by bringing back the shag carpets of the past. However, only a part of history is repeating itself. Because today's new rugs are not only smart and stylish but they are made of high quality materials, and come in many different textures, shapes, colors, and styles from the cuks shag (large thick pile) to the three or four inch luxury shag.

When choosing one of the new, modern shag rugs you receive maximum comfort and relaxation, a real complement to elegant and sophisticated environments. This style of rug invites you to stroke your fingers through their long fibers, to touch, caress, to lie down and relax on them letting yourself be warmed by their soft and comfortable texture. You might feel as though you are a well loved cat affording yourself to the sensation of heat and softness like that of a ball of wool as you comfort yourself on a new style rug.

Soft, luxurious, and plush, best describes the feel of an exquisite area rug from Greece! Today's deep pile rugs are hand woven from the best quality wool and come in many modern colors.
